St. Archangels Church

The church ‘St.Arch Angels Michael and Gabriel’ is the oldest church in the inner part of the monastery estate. It has existed from the foundation of the monastery. It has two floors. On the first one there is a over-arch gallery, as shown from the excavations in the beginning of the 1980s, reminds of the ones of the old Bakuriani's church. The current unusual appearance is a result of the construction of the main church in 1604, when the altar apse of ‘St. Arch Angels’ had been inserted into the narthex of the main church. It turns out that the two churches are connected. The temple itself, dedicated to Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel, is on the second floor and is from the type of a dome on a cross one nave churches. The sizes are: 10/7m Most probably there had been a small bridge or a platform that connected this church to the west ward of the monastery and it had been used as winter church.
There is a fresco inside from 1843, again by Mosko Odrinchanin. Only a small part of the older murals is preserved today – a cross, probably dating to XI-XII century.
The space on the first floor and the window arcs are covered by frescoes from 1841. Their author is Zahari Zograf. There are depictions of parables from the New Testament: The Widow’s Mite, Poor and Beggar Lazar, Parable of the Ten Virgins. The expenses were all covered by citizens of the villages around Assenovgrad. On the inside walls, there is a depiction of Aleksei I Komnin, the emperor, who, according to some sources was the first founder of the temple. Under this fresco, in 1905, excavations were made and grave with bones was found. It is not clear who they belong to, some historians suggest they might be of Patriarch Evtimii, but there is an ongoing debate on this subject.
